Foreign fishing brokers block Pacific moves to protect tuna stocks

Greenpeace Pacific Oceans campaigner, Duncan Williams, has hit out at a meeting held in Brisbane as a ‘disgrace’. Williams states: “Foreign tuna industries are preventing Pacific Island countries from protecting their tuna by not agreeing to a timely process or criteria to cut the number of boats on the water to a sustainable level.”
New tuna fishing technologies used by foreign fishing fleets are catching more tuna and other fish species than has ever been possible in the past: “If we continue to fish at this rate we are going to empty our oceans,” Duncan Williams said. Read more »
