A New Zealand group supporting political reform in Tonga has harshly criticised Tongan Attorney-General John Cauchi  for claiming on the Matangi Tonga online news site last week that Tongans cannot tell fact from opinion when reading the news.

Cauchi was speaking at a special meeting on August 27 with the Tonga Media Council when he explained the mandates of the Royal Commission charged with investigating last month’s sinking of the Princess Ashika ferry.

Tonga’s Royal Commission of Inquiry, charged with investigating why the Princess Ashika sank earlier this month, is expected to name its second member this week, according to Attorney-General John Cauchi.

The commission, established a week after the ferry tragedy, will have three members.
