The environmental group Greenpeace unveiled a solar-wind hybrid power system in West Papua at the weekend and called on the Indonesian government to harness more of the country’s huge potential for renewable energy.

The one-megawatt system, comprising solar panels generating 800 watts and a wind turbine putting out 200 watts, was built on Mansiman Island in Manokwari district.

Arif Fiyanto, Greenpeace Southeast Asia’s climate and energy campaigner, said the island was chosen to host the project because only 32 percent of its residents were connected to the electricity grid. Read more »

The Pacific Islands are urged to regain power over their ocean resources as forum leaders begin talks on the region’s most urgent issues in Port Vila this week.

Developing a sustainable fishing industry is a pressing issue, which includes Pacific nations being able to gain more out of their own resources.

Of the USD 3.4 billion earned every year from the Pacific fishing industry, island nations reap only 5 to 6 percent, according to Greenpeace. Read more »

Greenpeace Pacific Oceans campaigner, Duncan Williams, has hit out at a meeting held in Brisbane as a ‘disgrace’. Williams states: “Foreign tuna industries are preventing Pacific Island countries from protecting their tuna by not agreeing to a timely process or criteria to cut the number of boats on the water to a sustainable level.”

New tuna fishing technologies used by foreign fishing fleets are catching more tuna and other fish species than has ever been possible in the past: “If we continue to fish at this rate we are going to empty our oceans,” Duncan Williams said. Read more »
