Wansolwara, an award-winning Pacific regional journalism training newspaper, came off the presses of a Fiji daily newspaper for the first time in its 13-year history last night.

The 16-page paper was being read today as a liftout in the Fiji Sun, Fiji’s fastest growing daily.

Fiji’s military-backed prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama has vowed not to be bullied by Australia and New Zealand, and has defended his curbs on the Pacific country’s media.

“I’m trying to do what is good for Fiji, not what’s good for New Zealand, not what’s good for Australia,” he told Māori Television’s current affairs programme Native Affairs presenter Julian Wilcox in an interview broadcast  last night.

Pacific.Scoop is a new regional “hub” partnership venture between AUT University’s Pacific Media Centre and the independent news portal Scoop.

The centre is based in the School of Communication Studies where postgraduate Pacific student journalists and other media students with an interest in Pasifika affairs will be filing regular stories.

The chief editor of a new community newspaper catering for the Indo-Fijian and Indian diaspora in New Zealand has vowed to raise the bar in ethnic publishing.

Speaking at a national Diversity Forum seminar today on the new Asian media, Dev Nadkarni of the Indian Weekender challenged mainstream media to make better use of skilled but marginalised ethnic minority journalists.

“Good and experienced ethnic journalists are languishing as bus drivers, supermarket shelvers – or at the best, subeditors,” said Nadkarni at Wellington’s Te Papa museum.

The expected  fallout from PINA 2009 has been fast flowing since the two-yearly regional media circus. Many rifts were on show long before the conference began in Port Vila late last month – for example, the criticisms of PINA’s recent lukewarm actions over regional media freedom and the founding of the successful upstart Pacific Freedom Forum by PINA dissidents; the hostility between the conference hosts, Media Asosiesen blong Vanuatu (MAV) and the country’s main newspaper, Vanuatu Daily Post, and publisher Marc Neil-Jones; and the calls for PINA and Pacnews to be relocated outside of Fiji as a protest against the regime’s media censorship.
