It’s not good enough for Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully to shrug his shoulders, and deny knowledge of the $6.2 million Honolulu MFAT mansion exposed by TV3’s Story this evening. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“Putting aside the question of why New Zealand even needs a Consulate General in Honolulu, since when does the standard diplomatic package include St Stephen’s Ave-style heated pools, waterfalls and marble?”

“Even if Mr McCully didn’t know that his officials had run off to Hawaii to buy a mansion, he needs to front up and tell the public who approved the purchase. Those in his Ministry who thought this to be a sensible spend need to be corrected.”

“How can taxpayers trust their money to be prudently spent by the Government when MFAT splurges $6.2 million on an extravagant house for some mid-tier diplomat? Every dollar wasted on chandeliers in Hawaii is one less for CYFs, hospitals and priorities much higher than Mr Kaiwai’s beachside residence.”
