Kai Time Hits the Road with a New Host
Maori Television’s favourite food show, KAI TIME ON THE ROAD, returns to air on Sunday July 6 at 6.00pm with a new host at the helm.
Rewi Spraggon – chef, artist, musician and broadcaster – has taken over the reins of the long-running series and heads out on a culinary journey around New Zealand and beyond over 23 mouth-watering episodes.
“Working on the series was a dream job, says Spraggon. “I got to travel around the country and eat seafood.”
“The highlight was meeting all the characters along the way, hard case people who are giving it a go whether they are fishing, farming or whatever.”
A trained chef, Spraggon is no stranger to television, having previously presented Maara Kai on Maori Television.
During his career he cooked his way around the world and picked up a few awards along the way, including the World Indigenous BBQ Champion in 2005.
But he credits most of his culinary abilities to his mum.
“My mother was a caterer and the head ringawera (cook) at our marae so I was on her apron strings from a young age, he says.
“Now I take over the kitchen when I’m home, she’s handed the responsibility to me.
Spraggon says a highlight of the new series of KAI TIME ON THE ROAD was visiting Waituhi Kuratau Station near Taumarunui, where he milked sheep for the first time.
“It’s actually really good, he says.
“It’s such a bonus going to Maori businesses and seeing them be successful.”
In the first episode of KAI TIME ON THE ROAD, Spraggon heads to Leigh Fisheries, where he helps to unload the morning’s catch before cooking up a delicious fresh fish feast.
During the course of the series, he also visits Candyland in the Waikato, Waitomo Orchards, the Farm Butchery in Warkworth and Turangi, the trout fishing capital of the world.
And in a KAI TIME ON THE ROAD FIRST, he checks out the tropical food in the Cook Islands and takes in the latest foodie trends in Sydney.
