New Zealand Red Cross is sending emergency supplies in response to flooding which has severely affected Honiara and the Guadalcanal province.
The Solomon Islands Red Cross report a total of 49,000 people have been affected across Honiara and the Guadalcanal province, 23 people remain missing and the New Zealand government reports 21 fatalities.
New Zealand Red Cross aid workers Peter Winthrop and Rick Eisenhart are assisting the IFRC in their response to one of the worst natural disasters Honiara has seen in living memory.
Mr Winthrop is the acting IFRC country lead coordinating partners and assistance for lomon
Islands Red Cross.
Mr Winthrop says the scale of the disaster is huge for Honiara. Red Cross have opened an emergency operations centre working alongside other agencies and authorities to support those most in need.
New Zealand Red Cross emergency equipment, including 140 shelter kits and tools, 420 tarpaulins, 1,000 10%2Dlitre foldable water containers, kitchen sets, mosquito nets and a tap stand and bladder will be on the ground in Honiara on Tuesday 8 April.
New Zealand Red Cross is also providing media communications support to Solomon Islands Red Cross.
