11 February 2014 – Australia’s Channel 9 sampled a taste of Peppers Portage in the stunning Marlborough Sounds at the weekend, broadcasting a series of live weather crosses from the resort for its ‘Weekend Today’ television show.
Host Emma Freedman’s crosses were backdropped by picturesque shots of kayaks out on the sounds and a float plane landing in the bay to take guests out for a day trip, she even got up close to native wildlife cradling a tuatara from a nearby sanctuary. Emma closed her coverage with a relaxing breakfast on the Portage’s deck overlooking the Marlborough Sounds.
The Channel 9 crew was in the region as part of a Destination Marlborough and Tourism New Zealand initiative to promote Marlborough across the Tasman, and coincided with a campaign launch in Australia about New Zealand’s national cycle and walking trail.
Peppers Portage is right on the doorstep of one of the latest additions to the New Zealand Cycle Trail, the picturesque Queen Charlotte Track, so it was a perfect spot for Channel 9 to film. The Queen Charlotte track is the 21st Great Ride on the New Zealand Cycle Trail.
Stefan Kracke, General Manager, Peppers Portage Marlborough Sounds says, “I’ve cycled the trail many times and it’s spectacular, the views over the Queen Charlotte and Keneperu Sounds are stunning.”
The 70 km mountain bike ride from historic Ship’s Cove to Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds is a Grade 4 (out of 5) ride that can be as easy or challenging as you want to make it. The trail can either be biked over 4 days, 2 days or just as day trips, bikes and transfers can be booked at the resort.
Peppers Portage is a fitting complement to a day on the trail with its pristine waterside setting, and restaurant cuisine which features a seasonal menu making the most of locally sourced produce as well as herbs from the resort’s garden.
The resort offers guests a range of accommodation and dining options. Relax with a wine in the Retro Bar or dine at either Te Weka Restaurant – backdropped by sweeping views of the Marlborough Sounds – or Snapper Cafe and Bar.
