Rotary New Zealand is responding to the long term affects of Cyclone Ian that devastated the islands of Ha’apai and Vava’u in Tonga on 11 January 2014. In partnership with Mordi Tonga Trust (Mainstreaming of Rural Development Innovation) their goals are the re-establishment of the livelihoods of up to 431 households, the rehabilitation of land where crops have been destroyed and to provide the necessary materials and tools to help families restore their agricultural activities. Rotary New Zealand has set aside $30,000 in addition to a grant of $124,330 from the New Zealand Governments Disaster Response Partnership Fund. 289 prepositioned Emergency Response Kits (ERK’s) supplied by Rotary New Zealand were distributed to families in the days following the cyclone and a further container load is being sent from Auckland to replenish stock. Each ERK contains essential tarpaulins, household cooking and kitchen utensils, cleaning items, clothing, tools, hygiene, sanitation and medical items. Rotary members in Tonga assisted in the needs assessment and distribution. Schools on the islands of Ha’apai and Vava’u have suffered major damage to their infrastructure and Rotary is providing supplies of essential books, stationary and materials to replace that which was lost.
