A member of the “Jhon Beanal” gang was shot dead during a shootout by the joint forces of Indonesian military and police at PT Freeport copper mine’s east embankment operational area in the Papua region, Antara news agency reports.
The vice-head of Papua Police, Brigadier-General Paulus Waterpauw, told Antara that the dead man was a member of Jhon Beanal group, alias Jhon Botak, as the east embankment area was “known to be their hideout”.
“The shooting took place on the night of Thursday, January 9, during the joint forces regular patrol in that area,” he said.
“We are now still waiting to identify the deceased.”
It had been raining during the shootout, and this caused difficulties for the the evacuation of the body.
The joint forces found an M-16 gun on the victim and saved it as evidence.
During the 10-minute shooting, the police estimated that the Jhon Beanal gang had 10 to20 members and possessed about four guns, Waterpauw said.
The operational work of PT Freeport was continuing and the residents who lived around the location were safe.
“The shooting location was far away from the PT Freeport and the residential area,” Waterpauw said.
