Award-winning screenwriter and playwright Kathryn Burnett brings her popular Beginner’s Guide To Screenwriting Workshop to Wellington for the first time and promises to demystify the nuts and bolts of writing for the big screen.
Kathryn Burnett has been running the two day Beginner’s Guide workshop in Auckland for the past three years and it has attracted participants from all over the country, and lately, even the world. She has fielded enquiries from Fiji and Sri Lanka, and at her most recent workshop she welcomed two participants from the United States – although she admits at first she thought their booking was an elaborate joke or some kind of tax dodge.
“It just seemed extraordinary that two people would travel that far for a two day workshop but on arrival the two women were clearly the real deal and assured me that they just really liked the idea of a “how to workshop” that was specifically for people who want to write a screenplay but aren’t 100% sure the best way to start.”
Kathryn has been a screenwriter for over 18 years and has numerous film and television credits. Her script editor/consultant credits include Devil’s Rock, Love Birds, Dean Spanley and the award-winning short Poppy among others. She currently has 4 feature film screenplays in development – one of which is being co-written with Wellington local Nick Ward (Stickmen, Second Hand Wedding.)
She is also the writer of the multi-award winning animated short film Shelved (2012) which picked up the award for Best Animated Short at the New York Film Festival earlier this year. She is currently adapting the short film script into a feature length film with the short’s director James Cunningham.
The Beginner’s Guide To Screenwriting Workshop runs for two days (16 & 17th November) at the New Zealand Film Commission’s head office on Ghuznee Street.
“This is a great workshop for learning the basics. Kathryn includes the perfect mix of technical information and theory, along with a big dose of fun. As a professional writer this has given me invaluable tools.” Stacey Muncie (USA)
“Kathryn’s scriptwriting workshop was brilliant. I loved learning from her and would sit at the front of the class, furiously jotting down notes like a nerd. Kathryn has a natural ability to connect with an audience. She teaches with patience and humour and she provides cake for morning tea! ” Jaquie Brown – Presenter/ Actor/Screenwriter
“Kathryn Burnett’s workshop was the perfect introduction to screenwriting – an absorbing, entertaining and provocative session which made the intricacies of the art seem logical and accessible.” Duncan Greive – Critic/Journalist
