THE LAND AT THE END OF THE WEATHER REPORT | MARGARET ELLIOT
OPENING: 6.00pm Monday 4 February.
OPEN: 10.00am – 7.00pm Tuesday 5 – Sunday 10 February.
The Chatham Islands with predictions for showers and fine spells comes to our attention most frequently when we listen to the weather report and realize we have zoned out and forgotten to listen to the weather for Wellington.
In 2008 I found there was more to it when I visited the Chatham Islands with a group of fellow artists and was fascinated by the dramatic coastline and windswept beauty of this remote group of Islands. This series of works explores the contrast of intricate rock formations with the sweep of expansive spaces and I continue to experiment with the interplay between the painted image and expressive and textural properties of paint.
I have always had an interest in experiencing remote and desolate places and understanding the processes that form these landscapes. I have been painting and exhibiting for more than 30 years and a highlight of my career was when I visited Antarctica in 1998 as a recipient of the Artists to Antarctica fellowship.

TE HA O HINETEIWAIWA | ELIZABETH KEREKERE, TERANGI ROIMATA KUTIA-TATAURANGI, TONI SADLIER, CHRISTIE PATUMAKA
OPENING: 6.00pm Monday 11 February.
OPEN: 10.00am – 6.00pm Tuesday – Saturday.
Hineteiwaiwa is the goddess of child birth and te whare pora – the house of learning for weaving and female arts. As the ‘Ha’ or breath, we as Māori women artists acknowledge the rich cultural heritage from which we descend and which informs our contemporary practice. All are Gisborne based and have exhibited in Gisborne, Porirua, Wellington, Auckland and Toni also in Rotorua.
Elizabeth Kerekere (Te Āitanga a Māhaki, Whānau a Kai, Ngāti Kōnohi, Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri) is a multi-media artist who weaves, paints, carves and works with clay. Her work explores kaupapa Māori and her involvement in the takatāpui, lesbian, queer and trans communities.
Terangi Roimata Kutia-Tataurangi (Ngāti Kōnohi) uses vibrant colours in acrylic/oil paints and pastels on canvas and paper. Terangi is also a Master Nail Technician and will be offering Maori nail art during the exhibition. Her work reflects her identity as a young Māori woman, wife and mother. For examples see ariaaariki.wordpress.com .
Toni Sadlier (Te Āitanga a Māhaki) is a weaver who works in both traditional and contemporary forms; from intricate small kete to large installations. Toni is a grandmother whose work reflects her interests in nga wahine atua and commitment to protecting Papatūānuku.
Christie Patumaka (Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Kahungungu, Rangitāne) grew up in South Auckland surrounded by different cultures and married a man from Niue so her art reflects these Pacific influences. Christie specialises in woodcut relief work but also works in clay. Much of her work revolves around the responsibilities of parents. For examples see patumaka.wordpress.com.
