Eventing Season Underway
The South Island’s leading eventers had their first hit out of the new autumn season in balmy conditions at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island in Christchurch today.
Disappointingly there was just the one Advanced starter after the late withdrawal of young rider Katie Rankin on Time To Tango Too, leaving National Intermediate Champion Sam Taylor (Swannanoa) to compete solo aboard Leo Degas.
Despite the obvious lack of competition, Taylor was pleased with the nine-year-old son of Dream Boy, finishing on a score of 47.3, adding just 2.8 time penalties and four showjumping faults to his dressage score of 40.5.
The eight-strong Open Intermediate went to Outram’s Lauren Enright on the nine-year-old thoroughbred, Tokyo Road, moving up from seventh equal after dressage with a fast cross country, going clear. Enright finished just outside the time allowed, incurring four time penalties to finish on a total score of 47 penalties, well clear of Eve Hawes (Reefton) on Hurlingham Lansong, second on 51.7, with West Melton’s Emily Cammock’s pair Shaw Lee and Lewis, third and fourth respectively on 56.3 and 58.
Queenstown’s Grace Mannerswood and Hi Ho Said Rolly made the long journey north worthwhile coming through to take out the hotly-contested Open Novice, moving up from third after dressage with clear jumping, ahead of Sophie Abbott (Christchurch) on Johnny Suede, second and Giles Gormack (Amberley) on Lucero, third.
The Prydes EasiFeed Pre Novice was also a tight affair with Gormack taking the honours aboard his second mount, grand campaigner Woodbine Heritage, despite one rail down in the showjumping, ahead of Jessie Fitzjohn (Christchurch) on What’s The Buzz and Lucy Walker (Christchurch) on Bamboozle, who both finished on their dressage scores.
Competition was strong at the lower levels with large entries, and the cross country seemed to pose few problems.
Angus Taylor (Ohoka) on Ngahiwi Frosty was successful in the Fiber Fresh Training A, while the Saddlery Barn Training B went to Maggie Nichols (West Melton) on Bellwood Baritone, both finishing on their dressage scores.
The two pre-training divisions, which were sponsored by Merial and Warrens Equine, were won by Georgina McINtosh (Culverden) on Rose, and Brydie Morgan (Greymouth) on Awatuna Velvet Rose respectively.
The event marked the start of Eventing Canterbury’s autumn season, building up to the business end of the season with the FEI South Island Three Day Event in April, followed by the FEI National Three Day Event in Taupo in May.
