Fond farewell to Hon Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan
Labour Leader Phil Goff has expressed his deepest condolences to the family of Hon Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan.
“Whetu was a long serving Labour MP and the first female Maori Cabinet Minister, serving under Norman Kirk’s Labour Government of the 1970s,” Phil Goff said.
“Her father Sir Eruera Tirikatene was the first Ratana Labour Member of Parliament and was widely respected. The family’s close involvement in the Labour Party continues with Whetu’s son Rino Tirikatene standing for Labour this coming election in the Te Tai Tonga electorate.
“Whetu will be remembered for her strong contributions on behalf of Maori women, her work to achieve greater social justice as a member of the Labour caucus and her work as Tourism Minister.
“She will be fondly remembered by all who worked with her in the Labour Party,” Phil Goff said.
