Tsunami still a threat
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has downgraded the tsunami warning issued this morning following a large earthquake off the coast of Samoa this morning, but people are still being advised to stay away from coastal areas, river mouths, estuaries, and off the water.
The first wave from the Samoan tsunami to reach New Zealand was approximately 40 centimetres high when it reached the North Island’s East Cape, however a subsequent wave has been higher. It is likely that there will be on-going waves from the Samoan tsunami throughout the afternoon.
In Canterbury the waves could also coincide with high tide at around mid afternoon, which is likely to further increase the size of the waves. Therefore people need to continue to stay away for coastal areas and off the water.
It is possible that the waves could create some short-term surface flooding in low-lying coastal areas. If there is surface flooding people should phone the Christchurch City Council call centre on 941 8999, and the appropriate action will be taken.
