Pacific Mini Games ready to blast off

By Matariki Wilson of the Cook Islands News

The Pacific Mini Games will get underway in the Cook Islands today with eight sports codes kicking off.

The Rarotonga weekend was abuzz as arriving teams flocked to the markets on Saturday and to churches across the island on Sunday.

Even the sleepiness of a Rarotonga Sunday seemed to vanish as last minute preparations were made for the opening ceremony at the BCI Stadium.

Most of the 21 nations taking part in the games have arrived with just a few athletes yet to come.

At the Telecom Sports Arena in Nikao, the flags of the countries taking part are fluttering and heralding their presence.

About 1500 athletes and officials will march across the new running tracks at the BCI Stadium for the opening ceremony – all individually welcomed with a traditional turou.

The festivities should hit an all time high at the opening and will carry on right through to the closing of the games on October 2.

While a lot of preparations have been put into delivering a memorable opening ceremony, the test will be in the delivery of the individual sports competitions.
